Thermal sensor resolution. What you need to know!

Watch this video and you will be better informed than many self procalimed thermal experts. Paul Alisauskas, FYRLYT's lead thermal designer, offers a key insight that clears up common confusion about thermal sensor resolution. His expertise highlights a critical point: Thermal sensor size DOES NOT dictate thermal sensor resolution.

Understanding this is crucial because people easily misunderstand what's truly important in thermal imaging. This knowledge can actually save you thousands of dollars by helping you avoid overpaying for unnecessary features based on size misconceptions. FYRLYT wants to give you the real facts, based on science, so you can check for yourself and make smart choices for your specific needs.

FTV 640: Professional Remote Thermal Camera System

The FTV 640 is a professional, vehicle-mounted thermal imaging system engineered for demanding, wide-area surveillance. It offers a complete, integrated solution for monitoring thousands of hectares, day or night. Whether your objective is managing feral animals, monitoring livestock, securing assets, or ensuring perimeter security, the FTV 640 delivers unparalleled performance.

Designed and manufactured entirely in Australia, the FTV 640 system can be fully integrated with the HELLFYR 12000 or SPOTFYR 12000 spotlight and FYRSTIK remote handle. As a customer, you engage directly with our Australian design team for expert advice, ensuring you get a system that meets your exact operational requirements.

The Problem with Adapting Monoculars for Remote Use

Many users are sold thermal monoculars with promises of easy integration with tablets and spotlights for remote vehicle use, only to discover significant functional and stability issues. Resellers often lack the technical design or manufacturing insight to solve these problems, leaving the user with a system that fails under real-world pressure.

While a quality monocular is effective for its intended handheld purpose, mounting it on a vehicle roof introduces problems with durability, power supply, and data stability. For a truly effective operational setup that covers all scenarios, the ideal solution often involves a dedicated remote system for the vehicle and retaining a separate monocular for use on foot.

FTV 640: A Superior, Purpose-Built Solution

(P1) Being purpose-designed for remote vehicle use, the FTV 640 system offers significant advantages over any adapted monocular. Central to its design is the FTV Power Management Module and a robust, high-speed WiFi connection. This eliminates the two most common points of failure in adapted setups: cable failure and data lag.

Key advantages of the FTV 640 system include:

  • No Wire Wrap-Up: Our patented wireless power and data feed through the FYRSTIK handle means the camera can rotate 360° continuously with zero risk of tangled, broken, or disconnected cables.

  • Stable, High-Speed Video: The 5G WiFi delivers sustained data rates up to 390 Mbps, eliminating the frozen frames, video lag, and system reboots that frustrate professional users of lesser systems.

  • Purpose-Built Durability: The entire system is engineered from CNC machined alloy and robust components to withstand the long-term stress of vehicle-mounted operation.

Core System Features & Design Philosophy

The FTV 640 is not a generic camera in a different housing; it is a complete system conceived by professionals for professionals. We prioritised premium components, robust engineering, and an intuitive user experience over non-essential gimmicks.

Every aspect of the design delivers a tangible benefit:

  • Premium European Sensor: Utilises a high-performance 640x480 thermal sensor (<30mK, 17µm), chosen for its proven image quality and reliability over common Chinese-made alternatives.

  • Intuitive & Stable Software: The 'GUI' (Graphical User Interface) on the pre-configured tablet is designed for professional use. It is simple, stable, and features one-touch hotkeys for critical functions like recording, image capture, and palette swapping.

  • Robust Australian Manufacturing: The camera body and all associated components are designed and manufactured from CNC machined alloy by FYRLYT in Australia, ensuring ultimate durability.

  • Versatile Mounting System: A lockable, quick-release Arca-type clamp allows the camera to be used standalone on a FYRSTIK handle or integrated seamlessly with a HELLFYR or SPOTFYR spotlight.

Professional Use Case: Anti-Poaching Operations

The FTV system's features provide a distinct advantage for the vital work conducted by anti-poaching organisations. The ability to covertly scan vast terrain with a 360° field of view, free from cable restrictions, is a game-changer. The tactile FYRSTIK remotehandle gives operators an immediate sense of the camera's orientation, a key failing of joystick systems, allowing for faster communication and team coordination.

When integrated with a HELLFYR 12000 spotlight, the operator can instantly switch from covert thermal detection to powerful white light illumination. This allows for positive target identification, accurate assessment of the environment, and can serve as a powerful passive deterrent, all capabilities that a standalone thermal sensor cannot provide. FYRLYT proudly supports anti-poaching and conservation groups with direct purchasing and global freight-free shipping.

Understanding Key Thermal Concepts

The Role of White Light with Thermal Imaging

A common question is why a powerful white light spotlight is a key benefit with a thermal camera. Thermal sensors excel at detection but produce a flat image with little depth or detail, making it difficult to judge terrain or definitively identify a target at distance. A quality white light source, like a HELLFYR, complements the thermal view by providing crucial detail, depth perception, and context, allowing for a more accurate and responsible assessment of the situation. It can also be used strategically in a security surveillance scenario to make the subject aware they have been located.

Misconception: The Effect of IR Spotlights on Thermal

Contrary to a common misconception, an IR (infrared) spotlight does not increase the detection distance or benefit the image of a thermal camera. A thermal camera detects the heat emitted by an object. An IR illuminator projects IR light that reflects off an object. These are different parts of the spectrum. Projecting IR light does not change the thermal signature of an object and can actually add unwanted noise to the thermal image.

How Thermal Cameras Work vs. Digital Cameras

(P1) A normal digital camera captures visible light to create an image. A thermal camera works by detecting the infrared radiation (heat) that is emitted by all objects above absolute zero. It converts this detected heat energy into an electrical signal, which is then processed to create a visual image, where different colours or shades represent different temperatures.
